ARLO GUTHRIE

Arlo is the son of folk singer Woody Guthrie and Marjorie, a professional dancer. He was bar mitzvahed in his mom’s faith, but followed in his father’s footsteps. He’s been singing and writing songs about social injustice for decades, but he’s best known for the 18-minute satirical ‘Alice’s Restaurant’, the true story of his experience at the draft board in the Vietnam era. He protested the war, later became a Republican and now calls himself an Independent. In 1991, Arlo bought the church that had been Alice Brock’s home (yes, THAT Alice) and opened an interfaith community center that hosts fundraisers and a special Thanksgiving dinner (fans of Alice’s Restaurant will get the significance).
